As part of the Light Fair industry conference going on now in Las Vegas, a number of new long-lasting LED replacement lamps made their debut today, including a liquid-cooled bulb from Switch Lighting.

Also on tap are LED offerings from General Electric and Philips.

Switch said its new LED A-lamps are a true replacement for the incandescent bulbs that are common in U.S. homes and businesses. The company’s new lineup can be used in any fixture or orientation – inside or out.

Longer Life LED Bulbs Challenge IncandescentsSwitch said its thermal cooling system “uses a special liquid to move heat out to all surfaces of the bulb – not just the heat sink – for more rapid, even cooling, just like Edison did.”

A cooler bulb can handle more power, allowing a brighter light that lasts longer, Switch said.

As other companies have found, GE said its “chief nemesis was heat.”

“Though LEDs need a fraction of the power consumed by the incandescent bulb, the 27 watts that run the new bulb still make the LEDs inside so hot they could boil a cup of tea,” GE said in a statement. “LEDs are made from silicon, just like the semi-conductor chips inside your computer. Without cooling, they will burn up.”

Lighting rebates and incentives for energy efficient lighting retrofit projects are surging. In 2012, energy efficiency incentive programs totaled $6.8 billion, a 26% increase over 2011 ($5.4 billion), and a 55% increase over 2009 ($4.4 billion), according to the Consortium for energy Efficiency. Today, more than $6 billion in commercial lighting rebates and other incentives are offered by utilities and energy efficiency organizations covering some 80% of the United States. LED replacement lamps for interior and exterior lighting.

Utilities and energy efficiency organizations – http://www.dsireusa.org/ – offer these incentives as a least-cost resource planning strategy based on the understanding that it is more cost-effective to reward customers for reducing demand than to expand supply with costly new power plants.

As of late, lighting controls have begun to play a much larger part. In fact, the number of rebate programs available for lighting controls has almost tripled since 2009, covering occupancy and vacancy sensors, photosensors, daylight dimming systems and automatic time-based controls.

The most popular control rebate is for occupancy sensors; out of all the control rebates and incentives available, 50% are for remote-mounted occupancy sensors, followed by wallbox occupancy sensors with 23% and fixture-mounted with 14%.

Article: LED Lights The Future of Lighting is Here – So, what does the little indicator light on your cell phone, a street light, an exit sign, and the common household light bulb have in common? If your answer is that light emitting diode (LED) technology can power all these things, then you’re pretty bright.

LED Lights The Future of Lighting is Here

LED replacement lamps are a form of solid state lighting. Once the new kid on the block, LEDs have emerged as one of today’s most energy-efficient and rapidly growing technologies. There are a wide variety of LED products available in the market, with the technology found in automobiles, computers, televisions, recessed downlights in the kitchen, flashlights, and holiday lights. LEDs are different than other types of lighting in that they last longer, are more durable, and save more energy and money. They also emit almost no heat. By comparison, inefficient incandescent lighting gives off 90% of their energy as heat.

In comparing energy-efficient light bulbs with incandescent bulbs, if you pay $8 to light a space in your home with a traditional bulb, you would pay about $2 to light the safe space with an LED. ENERGY STAR-qualified LEDs use only 20%–25% of the energy and last up to 25 times longer than the traditional incandescent bulbs they replace. While LED light bulbs are more expensive at this stage, as with other electronics, prices are coming down as more products enter the market.

LED Lights The Future of Lighting is HereIn the outdoor lighting space, LEDs are impacting the sustainability initiatives of corporations and municipalities. WalMart now uses LED technology to meet updated DOE specifications for high-efficiency parking lot lighting, and is upgrading more than 250 existing lots. The company reports energy savings of 58% compared with ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2010, a widely used commercial building code. In comparing the performance of LED roadway lighting with high-pressure sodium (HPS) lighting in New York City, LEDs showed energy savings from 26 to 57%. Other major organizations, such as Lowe’s, MGM Resorts International, and the U.S. General Services Administration are also considering upgrading their lighting to cut costs, reduce energy use, and increase their competitiveness.

As the adoption of LEDs grows, their energy saving potential can be enormous for the nation. According to a recent DOE report, by 2030, energy savings from LEDs can be up to 300 terawatt-hours, or the equivalent annual energy output of about 50, 1,000 megawatt power plants. At today’s energy prices, this equates to approximately $30 billion in savings. These energy savings would also reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 210 million metric tons of carbon, and decrease the electricity consumption equivalent to powering 24 million homes.

Like it or not, thanks to government regulation and consumer demand, Thomas Alva Edison’s incandescent light bulb is heading for the land of disused technology along with VHS tapes, audio cassettes, and not-so-flat-screen low-definition TV sets. That leaves modern day consumers with the need to switch their day to day light purchases from traditional light bulbs to the somewhat controversial and sometimes problematic CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps) or LED lighting

The Lighting Revolution

LED stands for “light-emitting diode” and it is a technology we all see on a daily basis. It first became popularly known thanks to the once ubiquitous digital watches of the 1970s and 1980s. Within a few years, the watches would be somewhat déclassé — writer Douglas Adams was particularly fond of poking fun at them in his Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy — but they would eventually return to some degree as a retro phenomenon.

Today, of course, LED technology is used in countless formats, most especially including LED light bulbs. Though smaller LED lights are often used for more decorative functions, standard bulbs have many advantages over competing CFLs. LED bulbs do not contain the potentially harmful gases of mercury and halogen. Moreover, they cast a quality of light many prefer to the often harsh glare of CFLs, which are often all-too reminiscent of the type of office lighting nobody loves. They also last a great deal longer than CFLs and incandescents.

LED lights for cars can do pretty much anything other light bulbs do, but they do it better and more attractively. They are even used to mimic the power of the sun as grow lights for all kinds of indoor plants. They also adorn the front of cars and motorcycles where they often combine the functions of decoration and illumination, helping drivers to both see and be seen.

Let’s face it. When it comes to lighting, those old light-emitting diodes of the seventies are the wave of the future.

This is the last Lightfair before new regulations governing lightbulb efficiency begin to take effect in the US in January, and there’s a real sense of history and urgency on the show floor. Ready or not, the way we light our homes and offices is about to change, and the technology that will lead the way is somewhere in this hall. The selection of LED replacement lamps for interior use continues to grow and expand.

The Future of Light Is the LEDIf all goes according to plan, the provisions of 2007’s Energy Independence and Security Act will effectively ban 100-watt incandescents starting in 2012. Seventy-five-watt bulbs will depart in 2013, followed by 60- and 40-watt lamps a year later. So the race to find a suitable replacement technology is coming down to the wire. The industry is banking on LED lighting as the way forward, and it’s virtually the only bulb technology on display: There is barely a single incandescent or sickly compact fluorescent to be seen. Just 200,000 square feet of companies racing to fill their share of the world’s billions of standard sockets—and betting on LEDs as the way to do it.

There’s an excellent reason LEDs have taken on the aura of inevitability: LEDs are semiconductors, and like all solid-state technology, they are getting better and cheaper on a predictable curve. In 1999, a researcher named Roland Haitz, then heading up semiconductor R&D at Hewlett-Packard, coauthored a paper that became the lighting industry’s manifesto. By charting the historical prices of LEDs and projecting forward, Haitz estimated that the amount of light they produced would increase by a factor of 20 per decade, while the cost would correspondingly drop by a factor of 10.

Haitz’s law has proven remarkably accurate. But the lighting industry still has major hurdles to clear before LEDs gain acceptance by consumers. Beyond the very real technical issues—cooling, costs, light color—there’s the public’s lingering distaste for compact fluorescent lamps, which failed miserably in their projected role as bulb of the future. That sentiment has fed into a Tea Party-fueled backlash against the new regulations, and there have been attempts in Congress to roll them back entirely.

The reasoning behind the lighting provisions in the Energy Independence and Security Act is pretty straightforward: Incandescents convert less than 10 percent of the energy pumped into them into light, losing the rest as heat. More-efficient bulbs could save billions of dollars, decrease dependence on foreign oil, and significantly reduce greenhouse gases.

Still, the consumer backlash resonates, and not simply because CFLs are horrible, flickery, ugly, and unreliable. Evolutionary biologists believe that human lighting preferences are the result of our trichromatic vision—rare in nonprimates—which makes us particularly suited to daylight and the perception of primary colors. There’s an anthropological component as well: For 400,000 years, humankind has been banishing darkness with fire. And Edison’s bulb is, at its core, a burning filament that casts the glow of a flame. Abandoning incandescent bulbs means abandoning fire as our primary light source for the first time in human history.

Though there are countless 60-watt LED prototypes in evidence at Lightfair, few are available for side-by-side comparisons with incandescents. Most are sealed inside display cases or exist only in press releases or PowerPoint presentations. The Switch bulbs are out in the open: crystalline shells of clear, faceted glass, with aluminum prongs holding yellow-tinted LEDs that shine through the cooling liquid to cast a warm, living-room-quality glow—and draw only 13 watts to do it.

About 80 percent of all bulbs sold in the US are rated at or equivalent to 60, 75, or 100 watts, but nearly every LED brought to market so far has come in the 40-watt-equivalency range, good for little beyond closets and crawl spaces. Brighter bulbs are either too hot, too expensive (upwards of $50, though they can last for 20 years), or both. Switch plans to start selling its 60-watt-equivalent bulb this fall for around $30.

Article:LED Lighting For Facility Managers – Even considering the energy efficiency and other environmental benefits they can provide, LED lighting has still not been widely adopted in interior lighting applications. However, recent trends have been growing more favorable toward the use of this solid-state form of illumination. Facility managers (fms) who choose to retrofit with LED replacement lamps can reduce their energy bills significantly. But an important step in ensuring savings is to seek the right companies to educate them about the best product for their needs amongst the vast selection of LEDs on the market.

LED Lighting For Facility Managers

LEDs Emergence In Facilities; The amount of energy wasted in most buildings is enormous, and reducing energy costs for lighting used has been a main driver of change within the industry. The current wave began in earnest in the 1990s, and that transformation involved upgrading older, inefficient lighting lamp technology such as T12, HID lamps and fixtures, and magnetic ballasts with newer, more sophisticated T5 and T8 lamps and fixtures. The second wave (in motion since about 2006) has been replacing incandescent lamps with CFL lamps (see article on page 16 for an in depth look at this shift).

Taking place today is a third wave—one in which LED lighting is gaining ground faster even than some experts have expected. When LEDs first came out, they were typically used for indicator lights such as exit signs. As the technology advanced, they became suitable for outdoor signage and fluorescent and neon lighting replacement. Now the technology has evolved and has increased capabilities. LEDs are brighter, more energy efficient, durable, and have an extremely long lifetime. They are increasingly found in use for exterior and interior commercial and industrial applications.

Making The Move To LED Lighting

LEDs have already eclipsed incandescent sources in terms of efficiency, and when fixture performance is considered, they are powering past compact fluorescent and HID lighting in real world applications. They offer long service life, compact size, and greater directional control. As the performance of LEDs continues to show immense results in increased light output and decreased energy consumption, the technology becomes a promising choice for general illumination in facilities.

LED Lighting For Facility Managers

An LED lighting retrofit can not only reduce electricity consumption and maintenance costs, but can also improve the way a building supports its occupants, because these products provide a high quality white light whether the space is a warehouse or a general office setting.

In addition, LEDs are 25% to 70% more efficient than CFL and HID sources. They also reduce heat output, which in turn reduces required HVAC operations. Maintenance costs also decrease, because relamping, ballast replacements, and cleaning are needed less often.

Further, some LED products are sustainable and 100% recyclable at the end of their projected 50,000 to 100,000 hour life. LEDs also provide an environmentally friendly profile since they do not contain mercury.

Another technical benefit that fms should consider is that an LED lighting system has the ability to restrike instantly after a power outage, which eliminates downtime. That is important for organizations that want an aggressive disaster preparedness program that must kick into high gear immediately after an event occurs. With some other technologies, a power outage can last as long as 15 minutes while the lights enter restrike mode.
